Drawn from interviews with more than 60 mostly ordinary people who achieved extraordinary things, Making Gay History transports audience back in time and takes them on a compelling journey through the first half-century of the gay civil rights movement.
What struck me most during the process of adapting the book was how closely the struggles faced by the national movement mirrored those of the Western New York community in the past and today, said Crehan Higgins of the new piece. When I read Making Gay History, I knew these stories needed to be brought to life. Eric Marcus had his doubts. Its such a complex story and theres so much material that I couldnt imagine how Matthew could extract a coherent, emotionally charged narrative, said Marcus. The script blew me away. I cant wait to see what the actors do with it. Under the direction of BUAs newly appointed Artistic Director Chris Kelly, eight actors rise to the challenge of presenting the lives and experiences of Marcuss interview subjects to life in this intimate examination of the human spirit. The cast includes Pat Armstrong, Kate Elliott, Dava Jones, Mary Loftus, Eric Rawski, Leah Russo, & Guy Tomassi. Making Gay History will premiere on Friday January 28, 2005 at 8 pm at the Main Street Cabaret, 672 Main Street in Buffalo. The following day Marcus and Crehan Higgins will be at Talking Leaves (3158 Main Street in the University district) beginning at 1 pm, where Marcus will be signing books and both will answer questions about the show and book. On Monday January 31 at 7pm at the Main Street Cabaret, Marcus will give a lecture about the process of writing the book and his unique encounters with its subjects, in conjunction with the Pride Center of Western New York. Performances will continue through February 19, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm. Tickets are $20 general admission and $12 for students. Eric Marcus is the author and co-author of a dozen books, including Breaking the Surface, the #1 New York Times bestselling autobiography of Olympic Diving champion Greg Louganis. Matthew Crehan Higgins has been affiliated with buffalounitedartists since 2002. In addition to Confessions and Making Gay History, the company has also produced Crehan Higginss play Christmas Confessions. Chris Kelly has worked with buffalounitedartists for the past ten years. He is the award winning director of The Bad Seed, The Laramie Project, and the recent hit Southern Baptist Sissies.
