Last years spring cleanup event was an overwhelming success, with 700 volunteers cleaning 23 sites along nine of our local waterways. FBNR is seeking to expand the cleanup this year, with a goal of 900 volunteers working 30 sites across the Niagara River watershed during this event. Community, school, Scout, church and private groups as well as individual volunteers are all encouraged to participate in this community stewardship effort. It is important for volunteers to register early for successful site planning.

Spring Shoreline Sweep will include sites on the shores of the Niagara River, Buffalo River, Cazenovia Creek, Scajaquada Creek, Buffalo Creek, Ellicott Creek, Cayuga Creek, and South Park Lake. Volunteers will remove debris from the shoreline and shallows of these waterways, beautifying the community and making the riverbanks safe for wildlife and human visitors. Most cleanups are about 2-3 hours in length.

Shoreline cleanups are a wonderful way to get residents out on our beautiful rivers and creeks, and to develop a community sense of pride in the local environment, said FBNR Executive Director, Julie Barrett ONeill.

FBNR is conducting the Spring Shoreline Sweep in partnership with over two dozen local organizations, including the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the Niagara Beautification Commission.

To participate in the Spring Shoreline Sweep, volunteers may call the Friends of the Buffalo Niagara Rivers office at 881-1217 or send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it For more information about FBNR please visit our website at www.fbnr.org.
