By its action today the City of Buffalo, New York, has joined over 1,000 cities nationwide and a growing number of municipalities worldwide in appealing for the abolition of nuclear weapons.
Art. VI of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty reads: Each of the Parties to the Treaty undertakes to pursue negotiations in good faith on effective measures relating to the cessation of the nuclear arms race at an early date and to nuclear disarmament and on a treaty on general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control. On August 6th-9th, of this year, the Mayors for Peace Emergency Campaign to Ban Nuclear Weapons, led by the Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, will be conducting a review of the implementation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty during a commemoration in New York City of the 60th anniversary of the dropping of the first atomic bombs, to be attended by thousands of mayors and delegations of municipal governments (as well as by many heads of state). At its meeting today, the Common Council of Buffalo, New York, unanimously adopted a resolution endorsing the June 2004 call of the United States Conference of Mayors urging the President of the United States to adhere to the requirements of Article VI of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to negotiate complete nuclear disarmament. By its resolution the City of Buffalo also joined the demand of the World Council of Mayors for Peace for the abolition of nuclear weapons and nuclear weapons related materials at the earliest possible date. The Council has communicated its resolve to Mayor Anthony Masiello urging the support of his office.
The resolution was sponsored by Buffalo City Council President David A. Franczyk and co-sponosred by Masten District City Council Member Antoine M. Thompson.
