Browns campaign fell into the trap. They responded with anger and brought up race. Race is Helfers trump card. The more a black candidate addresses the issue of race in Buffalo the more the white community reacts. Helfers campaign strategy is betting on a rising wave of white reaction without addressing race. It is sad to see a good man like Kevin Helfer become moral and ethnically compromised as he sails in the Republican Rovian darkness. (One of the key tricks in a Rovian attack is to take the moral outrage of the victims response to the lie and turn it on the victim, taking the emotional angry response as a sign of guilt; the bigger the victims outrage the bigger the victims guilt and you insure that your media is there to get it.) Rovian Metaphysics: The Truth is only relative to the state of consensual reality that you can create through whatever means at your disposal. By Joe Schmidbauer If you are wondering where Kevin Helfers wrong crowd ads came from ask Carl Calabrese, executive-director of the Erie County Republican Party. It seems Carl has been in touch with the Rove political consulting people about databases and other forms of political advice. That Wrong Crowd ad is the first shot in what is going to be a fun-filled-dirt-ball campaign. For Helfer to display such rampant negativity this early in the game means voter suppression.
The attack ad on democratic Mayoral candidate Byron Brown was a classic Rovian attack. Attack your opponents strengths deflecting your mans weakness regardless of the truth or facts. The idea of drawing a connection between County Executive Joel Giambia and Brown over a $3,000 campaign contribution was pure swift boating to the max. It masked the truth that Kevin Helfer was a major player in the Erie County Republican regime as director of contract compliance for four years, a power patronage job, and as Social Services Commissioner.
